7TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR CULTURAL HISTORY (ISCH):
Artefacts, Culture, and Identity
Istanbul, 11-14 September 2013
Istanbul University and Fatih University invite the members of ISCH to join the society’s seventh annual conference 2013 on the shores of the Bosphorus. Istanbul defines its unique location through the border between two continents. Its multifaceted history as a metropolis in different civilisations invites us to reflect what it is when we talk about culture: Who is the agent manifesting cultures? How does culture change over time across political and social transitions? How do present-day inhabitants relate to cultural artefacts found in the soil of their land? The conference will explore the relationship between culture, concepts of geographical space, historical time, socio-ethnic groups and individuals. Language, religions, ideologies, elite and mass cultures all converge in shaping the way human beings understand themselves and one another.
Proposals for individual talks and for thematic panels should be submitted before 28 February 2013, including an abstract of no more than 500 words and a short academic CV to ischcongress2013@culthist.org . All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the organizing committee. Contributors will be notified within four weeks. The organising committee proposes the following list of topics:
• Culture and change
• Whose artefacts … whose remains?
• Constructing collective memories
• Scramble for Istanbul’s Past: Archaeology, urban development, and identity
• Healing artefacts
• Culture and political resistance
• Artefacts in the age of social networks
• Methodologies in the study of artefacts, culture, and identity
Members are cordially invited to suggest further items and organise thematic panel sessions.
We are also planning a meeting of the ISCH postgraduate network; please, contact the organisers separately at the address below.
For initial questions, please, contact ischcongress2013@culthist.org
Congress fee: 50 € (students free)
Presenters whose papers have been accepted are expected to join ISCH for the year 2013 (go tohttp://abdn.ac.uk/isch/directory.php for further details). Members of ISCH will receive the benefit of two issues of Cultural History, the Journal of ISCH (http://www.culthist.org/isch-journal/ ) and the opportunity to win the essay prize.
